A Canadian hospice can be a room in a hospital, or a stand-alone building.
Ontario celebrates three new residential hospice facilities
We provide home care, no matter the diagnosis. It is vastly underfunded, with waiting lists for long-term care, yet supports are there.
It’s often confused with hospice, a type of palliative care specifically for patients not seeking to be “cured.” That could mean people for whom no treatment options are left for curing their illness, or people who just don’t want to go through a hard medical treatment that’s likely to hurt and has only a small chance of working. US Medicare requires a hospice patient to have two doctors certify that life expectancy, if the illness progresses as expected, is less than six months. But chronically ill patients can have hospice care for more than six months, or can move in and out of hospice depending on the level of care they need.
