In September, 18 licensed practical nurses, or 10.55 full-time equivalents, will be replaced by continuing care assistants in units devoted to caring for those waiting for beds in nursing homes. The units affected include 4-East at the Northside General, 3B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and 4 North at the Glace Bay Hospital. According to Marie McPhee, director of seniors and restorative care for the Cape Breton District Health Authority, it will result in more appropriate health care for the people being served.
It's hard to believe that an assistant can, or should, do the work of a nurse.
"Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay nor an offence for which people should be penalised. but a misfortune. The cost of which should be shared by the commmunity. " ~Aneuryn Bevan. Founder of the NHS
"I felt that no boy should have to depend either for his leg or his life upon the ability of his parents to raise enough money to bring a first-class surgeon to his bedside."
