'I knew nothing about how to run a retirement home': owner

Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE) Newsletter

Fall 2012 Advocacy Centre for the Elderly newsletter is now available
The Fall 2012 ACE newsletter has articles on retirement home licensing fees, accommodation rates in long-term care, and sprinklers and other outcomes of the Muskoka Heights Retirement Residence fire.

ACE is an excellent Canadian organisation. They have staff lawyers who research issues of importance to seniors. This month's edition Fall 2012 (PDF) covers a couple of topics of importance to those in retirement homes:

  • CAN RETIREMENT HOME LANDLORDS PASS THROUGH THE HOME’S LICENSING FEES TO TENANTS?
ACE lawyers are of the opinion that in most cases, retirement home landlords cannot simply add on these licensing fees to a tenant’s monthly bills as either an increase in rent or as an additional care service charge.
  • ACCOMMODATION RATES IN LONG-TERM CARE

When a resident is admitted to a long-term care home, the issue of the rate for accommodation can be confusing. ACE receives a lot of inquiries concerning rates for long-term care accommodation.

Muskoka Heights Retirement Residence fire
One of the big stories in 2009 was the death of four seniors in a retirement home.
